Some sport heat-activated arch wires that use body heat to move your teeth more quickly with lesser pain. It is still probably the least expensive among the alternatives and now comes with colored bands that allow kids to express their individuality and uniqueness. Unfortunately, it’s still very noticeable.
- An alternative to metal braces. Invisalign consists of a series of almost invisible custom-made plastic aligners to fit over your teeth and slowly correct alignment issues over time. On average, takes about 12 months to complete its effect, though this may vary depending on each patient’s case. Its removable aligners are replaced every 2 weeks to adjust for the shifts and movement of the teeth, and you should remove it when eating.
The advantages of Invisalign are such that it’s almost invisible and you can drink and eat whatever you want without worrying about staining your teeth or having food stuck on the braces. Of course the biggest issue with this option is the cost since it can be quite expensive. As they are removable, they are also easy to lose and expensive to replace. Invisalign is also not recommended for serious dental issues and is also only available for teenagers and adults, but not for kids.
Smart Clip and Clarity Braces. Each of these options work like traditional braces. The Smart Clip is a quicker alternative and does not require elastic bands but instead uses small metal clips to secure the wires to the brackets.
Clarity braces, on the other hand, are just regular braces but are not noticeable since they are made from clear material. However, its use still requires ceramic fixing which mimic the color of your teeth.
The disadvantages for either are that they are larger than traditional braces which add to its discomfort when used and it takes a longer time to see the results compared to traditional metal braces.
Ceramic Braces. These are similar in shape and size as metal braces but have clear or tooth-colored brackets that make it blend with the color of your teeth. In some instances, even the wire is also tooth-colored for that invisible look. Its main advantage is that it is much less noticeable than metal braces and moves teeth faster than Invisalign. Its main drawback is that it is more expensive than metal braces and the brackets easily stain if not properly cared for.
Lingual Braces. The same as traditional metal braces where the main difference is that the brackets and wires are placed behind the teeth instead of in front. Its main advantage is that they are invisible from the front. However, because of where they are located, it can be more uncomfortable at first and be difficult to clean. It is not also advisable for severe cases of misalignment. Its location also causes adjustments to take longer than usual, and they are more expensive than metal braces.
If you are thinking of having braces, it helps to know that you have plenty of options other than the traditional metal braces, thanks to advancements in modern dental technology.
